Orillia Jim Wilson Chevrolet Minor Peewee - Champions at Silverstick Qualifier
Submitted By Susan Burnett on Wednesday, December 05, 2018
The Orillia Jim Wilson Chevrolet Minor Peewee Terriers travelled to Sudbury to compete in the Regional Silver Stick Hockey tournament on Nov 29th-Dec 2nd.

On Friday morning, the Minor Peewee Terriers faced Sault Ste Marie in their first game.  Reece Cordeiro started the scoring off early and he scored twice after the first few minutes of play.  Later in the first,  Sault Ste Marie scored a short handed goal but Adam Trumble responded in the next shift to make it 3-1 at the end of the first. Halfway through the 2nd, Sault Ste Marie scored another one to make it 3-2 at the end of the 2nd. This was a very competitive game that had no scoring in the 3rd but the Terriers came out ahead with the win, 3-2.

In Game 2, the team played against the hometown team, the Sudbury Wolves.  Mason Taylor-Wood scored twice in the first period for a great start for the Terriers. In the second period, Mason Bard had a blistering shot that was tipped in by Jacob Norman to make it 3-0. With one Terrier in the box, Ryan Warwick deked out the goalie for a short handed goal before the end of the 2nd. To start off the third, Nathan Ross fired one past the goalie.  Keeping the momentum going, Cordeiro scored then Taylor-Wood netted one more for a hat trick to finish at 7-0. Ethan Yateman played amazing to earn the shutout for the game.

In game 3, the team went up against the Nickel City Sharks.  The Sharks took an  early lead but Michael Murphy tied it up with a wrist shot late in the first period. Hiland Monague scored at end of the second so the Terriers finally took the lead 2-1 at the end of the 2nd.  The Terriers didn’t look back as Cordeiro scored then Murphy had 2 more for a hat trick!  Parker Windsor blocked many shots to keep us ahead for the win, 5-1.

Late Saturday night, the boys faced the home team in the SemiFinals. Halfway through the first, Warwick sniped one to score the first, then Evan White had a slap shot from the point for the Terriers to lead 2-0 in the first  period.  Early in the 2nd, Monague made a perfect pass for Trumble to easily score on the Wolves. In a matter of minutes, the Wolves gained momentum to tie it up 3-3 at the end of the 2nd. It became an intense game and Dylan Craddock- Beckett scored bardown to take the lead back. Cordeiro scored to make it 5-3 with less than 3 minutes left. The Wolves pulled their goalie and Carson Copegog sealed the game with an open net goal for a Final score of 6-3. Yateman was the winning goalie.

Late Sunday afternoon in snowy Sudbury, the team was up against the Nickel City Sharks in the Finals.  The Terriers had a few penalties but Windsor was strong in net holding off the Sharks’ shots with no score in the first 2 periods on either side. We had beat this team in the round robin but the Sharks were playing a very strong defensive game and we couldn’t put the puck in the net. There was less than 4 minutes left, then Monague received the perfect pass from Warwick and we finally scored!  With 52 seconds left, Murphy scored off a rebound to make it 2-0.  Windsor was stellar in net and celebrated the win with a shut out with the help of our defence - Bradley Fraser, Carson Copegog,  Evan White, Jacob Hazel, Layton Assance and Mason Taylor-Wood.

Orillia Minor Hockey would also like to Congratulate the Orillia Scotiabank Minor Midget Team on winning their qualifier for the International Silverstick.  Both teams will compete for the International Silverstick Championship in January!!
