Local teams shine at Winter Classic

Four local teams skated to championship banners in their respective divisions and several others just missed earning titles at the annual Jim Wilson Chevrolet Buick GMC Winter Classic, held at local rinks throughout the region from Thursday to Sunday.

The tourney attracted 74 teams that competed in 11 divisions ranging from novice to midget. Here’s a look at how local teams fared.

Minor atom

The Julie Emery RBC Mortgages Terriers managed one win on the weekend — a 9-1 romp over the Erindale Spitfires. The Owen Sound Junior Attack went undefeated, capping its weekend with a 5-1 win over Grimsby to take the seven-team division.

Atom

The Burton Team of Investment Planning atoms captured their divisional title Sunday night with a 2-1 victory over the Welland Tigers. It was the Terriers’ third one-goal game of the day. The home side edged the West Mall Lightning 3-2 in a thrilling semifinal and started the day with a 1-0 win over the Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds. Orillia opened round-robin play Friday with a 10-0 victory over Grimsby, then suffered its lone loss of the tourney — a 3-2 setback against West Mall.

Novice

The Moonstone Mechanical novices went undefeated, dominating the opposition throughout the three-day event as they outscored their opponents 32-6 in their five wins. Action started Thursday night as the team opened the tournament with a 7-0 shutout of the Oro Thunder. Friday morning, the Terriers crushed the Oshawa Minor Generals 8-1. Saturday, the Terriers blanked the Garden City Minor Hockey Association’s Falcons 7-0 to clinch their spot in Sunday’s playoffs. The local squad continued its strong play with a 6-3 win over Oro to skate into the title game against the West Hill Golden Hawks, which also sported a 4-0 record heading into the championship. Orillia capped its stellar weekend with a 3-2 win to clinch the crown.

Minor peewee

The Jim Wilson Chevrolet peewees won their three-team division. Orillia opened action with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to the Glanbrook Rangers Friday morning, but rebounded in the afternoon with a 6-0 whitewash of Ottawa West. In Saturday’s semifinal, it was a rematch and the result was similar as the Terriers defeated Ottawa 5-1. In the championship game, Orillia earned revenge against Glanbrook, winning the title with a 4-0 decision.

Peewee

The Orillia Mid-Ontario Disposal Terriers went undefeated, allowing five goals in four games as they won the four-team peewee division. Orillia opened action Friday with a 6-2 win over South Muskoka, then blanked Peterborough 7-0 Saturday, before following that up with an 8-2 win over Stoney Creek. In the championship game Sunday, Orillia dominated, skating to an 11-1 victory over South Muskoka.

Peewee AE

The Jim Wilson Chevrolet peewee AA Terriers could not find the back of the net early on as they dropped a 3-0 decision to Ancaster Friday morning and lost 5-0 to Leaside Friday night. Saturday, they rebounded with a hard-fought 4-2 triumph over St. Mary’s. But the team’s tourney ended Sunday with a 5-1 loss to Ancaster, which went on to beat Leaside 3-0 to win the division’s crown.

Minor bantam

After a perfect start to the weekend, the Rama First Nation Terriers had to play two games in four hours Sunday and it proved too much as the weary home side was edged 3-2 by a rested Oshawa Minor Generals team in the championship tilt at Rotary Place, falling just short of earning a title in the six-team grouping. The local squad opened action Friday with a 5-1 defeat of Sudbury. Saturday, Orillia crushed Temiskaming Shores 6-1 and then edged the Ottawa West Golden Knights 4-2. Sunday, the Terriers defeated TNT 5-2 at Brian Orser Arena before running out of steam an hour later against Oshawa.

Bantam

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 Terriers started strong, earning a 7-4 win over Huntsville and a tough 2-1 decision over Ancaster. But the Burlington Eagles blanked Orillia 2-0 and the local squad was ousted after suffering a 2-1 loss to Stratford. Woolwich went 5-0 to win the 10-team division.

Bantam AE

It was a tough weekend for the C.C. Tatham and Associates squad, as it dropped back-to-back one-goal heartbreakers Friday: 3-2 against Collingwood and 6-5 against Pickering. Saturday, the squad rebounded to earn a 3-2 triumph over Pickering, but lost 8-4 to Collingwood Sunday. Collingwood won the three-game division.

Minor midget

The Scotiabank Terriers dropped a 3-2 decision to Stratford Friday afternoon, but rebounded later that night with a 9-0 rout of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Saturday, the local team kept rolling with a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa West Golden Knights. Sunday morning at Rotary Place, the hosts edged Caledon 6-5 to punch their ticket to the title game. But the Nepean Raiders proved too strong as they beat Orillia 4-1 to claim the title in the eight-team age group.

Midget

The Kelsey’s Restaurant Terriers skated to a 7-3 win over Midland Thursday, shut out Elliot Lake 4-0 Friday and then blanked Stittsville 3-0 Saturday. But in Sunday’s semifinal, the Huntsville Otters prevailed 4-2 to knock Orillia out of the tournament. Huntsville then lost 8-2 to Welland in the finale of the nine-team division.
