Character Building through Charitable Acts
The Orillia Minor Peewee AE Terriers took their strong characters and determination off the ice for a change and brought their grit to honour the spirit of generosity, kindness, and selflessness to the community.

The players were all challenged by coaching staff Jason King, Chad White, Larry Liscoumb, and Matt Allen to work at home for family, friends, and neighbours doing chores to raise a minimum of $20 each.  These earnings were brought to a team party held at Jason’s No Frills where the boys were given a wish list from The Sharing Place.  They took their lists and went shopping with parents and team staff, selecting food and personal care items to support local individuals and families in need.  In addition to their personal purchases, they purchased over $200 worth of canned vegetables as a team to supplement the food drive.

After shopping, Chris Peacock, Executive Director of The Sharing Place, hosted the boys to explain how the community hub works and gave an informative tour of their current location at 22 West Street South.  The boys learned so much about how their contributions can help to support the community and about how The Sharing Place is an organization that goes well beyond being simply a food bank.  The team learned about its contributions to school snack programs, workshops to promote self-efficacy (ie. Cooking and meal planning), and realized that they can use their voice and action to promote year-round drives and contributions to this amazing organization.

The Orillia Minor Peewee AE Terriers team is made up of 17 grade 6 boys from Orillia and area.  Team members include: Ethan Hardy, Caleb Sawyer, Austin McCrackin, Damian Deruiter, Gordon Allen, Sullivan Gromek, Henry Cox-Kikkajoon, Evan King, George Locker, Daniel Slemin, Evan Liscoumb, Kirk Gillan, Julian White, Lukas Palaro, Riley Vollick, Sebastien Soczka, and Benjamin Brodie.  They have meshed well as a team and are also proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the ice, currently sitting in the middle of all of the Minor Peewee AE teams in the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League standings.  This proves particularly impressive considering that this team was somewhat of an afterthought after Orillia teams had already been made and there was an overabundance of Minor Peewee players that had not been placed on a team but showed an interest in participating in representative hockey.  The hockey association and its advocates thankfully recognized the value in supporting the development of these players and parents and bench staff are very proud of their efforts and are working with them in the spirit of minor league hockey: to develop skill and character while having fun and working towards common goals in the rink and in our community.

Merry Christmas from the Orillia Minor Peewee AE Terriers!
