The Rama First Nation Minor Bantam Orillia A Terriers travelled to Sudbury this past weekend to compete in the Regional Silver Stick Tournament. Orillia squared off against division rivals the Barrie Colts in game #1. Despite both teams playing a physical style, the Barrie Colts were the only team to register a goal in the contest, stealing game 1, 1-0. Sam Neely defended the net for the Terriers and earned MVP for the game.

Orillia then took on Glanbrook Rangers in game 2. Orillia went down 1-0 in the early part of the second period, but Jakson Gerrard tied it just over a minute later, on assists from Owenn Banks and Dawson Mattison.  Glanbrook took an early penalty in the second period, which led to Mattison scoring giving the Terriers their first lead. Gerrard and Quinn McConnell registered assists on the goal.  The Rangers pushed late in the third to get the tying goal, when Gerrard stole the puck and put his second of the game in to ice the win for the Terriers. Jackson Mitchell stood tall in net turning away tons of shots, especially down the stretch. Gerrard was awarded MVP for the game.

In game 3, Orillia battled one of the home teams Nickel City North Stars. The home crowd energized the squad who put four unanswered goals past the Orillia keeper Neely.  Mitchell took over late in the second period, which was enough to spark some offence. Brock Jeffels scored to make it 4-1, with assist going to Kaiden Robitaille. Jonah Teahen scored midway through the second period to bring the Terriers within two goals; the lone assist went to McConnell. Minutes later Whyatt Winkel scored on the power play to bring the Terriers within a goal. The Terriers pulled Mitchell, and put the pressure on Nickel City. Orillia’s Jhett Winkel scored with under 15 seconds left in the game to earn the tie when Jeffels threw the puck to Winkel. Jhett Winkel earned the MVP for the game.

Orillia skated against the other home squad Nickel City Phantoms in the semifinals. Orillia outworked and outclassed the Phantoms earing the 2-0 victory.  Goal scorers in the contest were Nolan Inglis from Andrew Thorn and Gerrard from Charlie Kearns. Mitchell was between the pipes for the Terriers.  Orillia was to play the Rangers for the second time in the tournament, this time to see who would advance for the coveted international berth. Jeffels was named the MVP.

In the final, the Rangers were physical from the opening faceoff and pushed the Terriers to their limits. But behind solid goaltending by Neely, the Terriers weathered the storm and held onto a tie through two periods of play. Early in the third period, Mattison broke the scoreless tie with a great individual effort on the power play with a goal. A few minutes later, Sam Laughlin tipped a McConnell point shot past the Rangers goalie for a 2-0 lead. The Rangers were able to score one goal with their goalie out with just over a minute left in the game and seemed like they were going to get the equalizer. With just under one minute remaining, Teahen intercepted a pass from the Ranger defence and outskated two Ranger players to earn the empty-net goal and sealed the win for the Terriers 3-1. Additional assists in the game went to Mason Burnett and Gerrard. Neely was again named MVP.

The Terriers will attend the International Silver Stick Tournament in Newmarket in January.

The Terriers look to continue their hot-streak this week in league action. Go Terriers!
