Open Letter to All Members of Orillia Minor Hockey with regards to the Couchiching Covid 19 Assessment Centre at Rotary Place
Submitted By Susan Burnett on Thursday, October 8, 2020
On Monday, October 5, Orillia Minor Hockey was notified via an email that the City of Orillia, Emergency Management Committee in conjunction with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital made the decision to relocate the Couchiching Covid-19 Assessment Centre to Rotary Place – Blue Pad (on the floor).  Orillia Minor Hockey was not consulted in this decision.

President, Randy Gardy contacted the Mayor’s office and spoke with Mayor, Steve Clarke yesterday.  In discussion with the Mayor, it was stated that Rotary Place was the best location for the Assessment Centre.  Both the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and the Orillia Soldier’s Memorial Hospital feel “ there are no concerns with Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, or from a clinical and epidemiological perspective with this use”.  “The facility allows for dedicated  entry and exit and a complete separation of the Assessment Centre from the rest of the building to allow for regularly scheduled programs to continue”  Users entering the facility must wear a mask, practice frequent hand washing and social distancing within the facility.

Orillia Minor Hockey also reached out to Ontario Minor Hockey and Hockey Canada to ensure that they were made aware of the Assessment Centre location and to confirm that insurance for our members would not be affected.  A response back from Hockey Canada states that “the insurers are fine with this provide the provincial health/municipal health board approve it and have all risk management procedures in place from the facility’s standpoint.”  The email goes on to advise that our Members need to be made aware of the location of the Assessment Centre.

Orillia Minor Hockey understand that parents and players are concerned and may have questions, President, Randy Gardy was directed to have members who have concerns or require more information to contact Terry Dyni, Director, Community Relations Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital at 705-327-9179.
