Great start to the season!
The 2015-2016 Orillia Terriers Major Peewee “A” team started their
season with an exclamation mark by not only capturing the Ajax “Break the Ice”
hockey tournament this past weekend but going undefeated in the process.
The tournament started with a 2-2 tie against a strong Newmarket Redmen team with goals coming from Jesse Ashkewe and Owen Vandusen, assisted by Meguire Naughton and Will Mullen. Next, the team faced the Ajax Knights and pulled out another 2-2 tie with Mullen (plus 1 assist) and Vandusen scoring, assisted by Devin Baxter, Kooper Tucci, and Carson Bussieres. In the last round-robin game, the Terriers came out skating hard and were rewarded with a 4-0 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors. Once again Mullen scored and added 2 assists, Baxter chipped in a goal and an assist, Bussieres scored as did Cole Rasmussen. Assisting were Bradley Adams, Isabela Fleguel, Naughton, Vandusen and Liam McDonald. Registering the shut-out was Teddy McCollum-Kuntz. Advancing to the quarter-finals, the Terriers faced off against the Whitby Wildcats and after Naughton scored to tie the game at 1-1 (assists to Mullen and Fleguel), the game went to a shootout. Ashkewe scored for the Terriers and Coulter Taylor was solid in net to gain the shoot-out victory and advance to the semi-finals. Facing the Pickering Panthers, the team skated hard and with strong defensive play by Nolan MacNeal, the Terriers pulled off a convincing 4-1 win on the strength of goals from Naughton (2) and Aidan Colebrook with assist from Mullen (2), Adams and Jack Marwick. The victory led the team to meet the Redmen again the finals where they skated hard and played a strong defensive game, winning the tournament with a 4-2 hard fought game. Vandusen contributed 2 goals and an assist, Rasmussen had a goal and rounding out the scoring was Bussieres with helpers going to Fleguel, Baxter and Adams.
